LA CREACIÓN DEL PAISAJE CONTEMPORÁNEO / THE CREATION OF THE CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE

Las ruinas en las obras de Carlos Cánovas se sitúan en la periferia urbana, el lugar por excelencia de lo anti-monumental, en donde los espacios los determina la intervención humana no planificada, azarosa, inconstante y en ocasiones inconsciente. En ellos, Cánovas no solamente registra el lento paso del tiempo en las zonas limítrofes, el peso de la obsolescencia y el desuso sobre la arquitectura utilitaria; también constata un conato de rebeldía de la naturaleza frente al dominio humano y el modo en que lo vegetal comienza a reclamar de nuevo para sí el paisaje (Alicia Ventura, del catálogo de la exposición).

The ruins that appear in Carlos Canovas’ images lie on the outskirts of the city, a quintessentially anti-monumental setting, where spaces are determined by random, intermittent, unplanned -and at times unconscious- human activity. Not only does Cánovas record the slow passage of time, the burden of obsolescence and the disuse of utilitarian architecture in these peripheral areas; he also draws attention to an incipient fight back by Nature against human domination, showing how vegetation is beginning to reclaim the landscape for itself.
