A propósito… / Regarding...

(1993-2019)

Seen from a certain distance, photographs in an exhibition are little more than grey, colorless, lifeless stains. But when we move closer, we realize that, behind the glass case, they are in fact dreaming a waking dream; an intense, highly suggestive dream. Closer still, the shaded areas seem almost be in motion. Up close, the eye discovers colonies of parasites -spectres, reflections, glints, shinings, unfocusings- living there, in that imposture, their ephemeral lives, at once discreet and noisy. To surrender to the charm of these parasites, because they do have charm, is to become another parasite. That way we can actually get into and inhabit an image that is particularly dear to us, penetrate it and live in its mystery, be a traitor and yet, despite it all, even through our unfaithfulness, cherish it for ever. (Carlos Cánovas)
