POR LAS MISMAS CALLES / THE SAME STREETS

El fotógrafo tiene la obligación de ser un fabricante de imágenes (mentales), es decir, alguien que debe pretender que sus fotografías sean algo más que meras descripciones, para lo cual ha de luchar contra la misma naturaleza del aparto que maneja. De no ser así, su labor será absurda. Cuando miramos fotografías, al igual que cuando leemos, participamos de la imaginación del autor, algo que nos hace más humanos (Maria Noel Lapoujade). Como materia de arte, la imagen fotográfica adquiere sen tido en tanto que propuesta. Y como propuesta, nace y obtiene valor a partir de planteamientos que deben ser sinceros.

En el contexto artístico de un creciente deseo de originalidad conceptual, creo más en lo que escribió José Martí, que siempre acabo citando, y que de algún modo invierte los términos: «Cuando las cosas son sinceras, son nuevas». Por eso, dentro de la extensa tradición de las plantas como tema fotográfico, quiero recordar un un par de nombres clásicos, no solo por sus imágenes sino por una actitud que aprecio. El de Josef Sudek, con las fotografías en el alféizar de su ventana, y el de Paul Strand, en su pequeño jardín de Orgeval. Hay en ambos casos un mundo próximo, íntimo, hecho de contemplación y de tiempo. Las plantas como presencia inadvertida, cercana y silenciosa. Más allá de la estética, hasta un poco humana. A photographer has the obligation to be a manufacturer of (mental) images, that is, someone who must pretend that his photographs are more than mere descriptions, for which he must fight against the very nature of the device he manages. Otherwise, your work will be absurd. When we look at photographs, just like when we read, we participate in the author’s imagination, something that makes us more human (Maria Noel Lapoujade). As a matter of art, the photographic image acquires meaning as a proposal. And as a proposal, it is born and obtains value from approaches that must be sincere.

In the artistic context of a growing desire for conceptual originality, I believe more in what José Martí wrote, which I always end up quoting, and that somehow reverses the terms: «When things are sincere, they are new.» Therefore, within the extensive tradition of plants as a photographic subject, I want to remember a couple of classic names, not only for their images but for an attitude that I appreciate. Josef Sudek, with the photographs on the windowsill, and Paul Strand, in his small garden in Orgeval. In both cases there is a close, intimate world, made of contemplation and time. Plants as an unnoticed presence, close and silent. Beyond aesthetics, even a little human. (From the exhibition catalog).
