PLANTAS Y CIRCUNSTANCIAS / PLANTS AND CIRCUMSTANCES

«Plantas y circunstancias» es una exposición que reúne cinco series de trabajos del fotógrafo Carlos Cánovas (1951), uno de los referentes en la fotografía española de corte documental. La selección de estas series viene dada por un interés en el mundo vegetal que ha acompañado al artista desde hace ya muchos años, desde que centrara su objetivo en las relaciones que las plantas y otros elementos naturales tejían con la construcción cultural que les rodea y con la mirada que ante ellas se detiene. Cánovas, heredero, como muchos otros artistas de su generación, del documentalismo estadounidense, ha trabajado en profundidad en torno a la dialéctica centro/periferia, algo que pudo verse con precisión en sus series en torno a Bilbao y sus fuertes transformaciones. Con frecuencia, sin embargo, su objetivo ha virado hacia una imagen más doméstica en la que lo natural y lo humano, o, al menos, lo intervenido por el hombre, forjan un notable equilibrio. “Carlos Cánovas. Plantas y circunstancias”, ocupará las salas 1 y 2, que dedicamos habitualmente a la fotografía realizada en España, y que, en fechas recientes, viene tratando, de uno u otro modo, la cuestión del territorio, un espacio iconográfico que Carlos Cánovas ha transitado, durante décadas, con intensidad y clarividencia. «Plants and Circumstances» is an exhibition that brings together five series of works by photographer Carlos Cánovas (1951), one of the benchmarks in Spanish documentary photography. The selection of these series stems from an interest in the plant world that has accompanied the artist for many years now, ever since he focused his objective on the relationships that plants and other natural elements wove with the cultural construction that surrounds them and with the look that stops before them. Cánovas, like many other artists of his generation heir to American documentary photography, has worked in depth around the center/periphery dialectic, something that could be seen with precision in his series about Bilbao and its strong transformations. Frequently, however, his focus has veered towards a more domestic image in which the natural and the human, or at least the man-made, forge a remarkable balance. Carlos Canovas. Plants and Circumstances”, will occupy rooms 1 and 2, which we usually dedicate to photography taken in Spain, and which, recently, has been dealing, in one way or another, with the issue of territory, an iconographic space that Carlos Cánovas has transited, for decades, with intensity and clairvoyance.
